Review of Pumpkin Pet Insurance: What Pet Owners Need to Know

Jan 27, 2024 By Susan Kelly

Pumpkin Pet Insurance's US Fire Insurance Company-underwritten accident and injury coverage is extensive. It provides one coverage choice, but you may choose the deductible and yearly limit to fit your budget.

Most policies don't cover wellness costs. However, puppies and kittens under 6 months old are eligible for preventive care. The wellness add-on might cover vet exams, immunizations, and parasite screening for older dogs.

Plans and Coverage of Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin provides Pet Health Insurance for accidents and illnesses and a preventative care kit for planned vet visits. See what each plan includes below.

Pet Health Insurance Plan

Pumpkin's basic pet insurance covers accident and sickness diagnosis and treatment. The base package covers microchipping, behavioral therapy, prescription food, and acupuncture, which other pet insurance firms charge extra.

The Pet Health Insurance Plan also covers:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Surgery and lab testing
  • Hospitalization
  • Supplies for medical use include diagnostic tests like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans.
  • Supplements for disease or injury
  • Needed dental procedures like tooth extraction
  • Non-essential dental care like cleanings
  • Exam costs for covered accidents or illnesses

Additional Coverage

Pumpkin's only coverage add-on is its wellness package. Comprehensive base insurance without add-on costs is its specialty.

Preventative Essentials Pack

Wellness benefits for normal veterinarian care are available from Pumpkin. While not covered, the Preventative Essentials Pack offers partial returns for yearly checkups and immunizations. The optional package charges cats $12 per month and canines a little under $20.

The dog preventative care bundle includes the following:

  • 2 vaccinations
  • Annual wellness checkup
  • Single heartworm blood test
  • A tick infection blood test
  • One fecal parasite and worm test

Cat preventative essentials pack includes:

  • Just one vaccination
  • Annual wellness checkup
  • One worm and parasite feces test

Pumpkin offers a Preventative Essentials Pack for puppies and kittens aged 8 weeks to 5 months, including four vaccines, a wellness examination, and a worm and parasite fecal exam. Pumpkin will fully reimburse up to four immunizations, even if your dog or kitten has gotten them before enrolling.

Pumpkin Coverage Levels

A few criteria determine how much protection you need and how much you pay for each pet insurance plan. Pet insurance companies provide numerous deductibles, reimbursement rates, and yearly limitations to personalize coverage. Pumpkin reimburses every pet 90%, but the deductible and annual maximum are modifiable.

Deductible Options

Pumpkin dog insurance provides $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 deductibles. A greater deductible lowers monthly premiums but raises out-of-pocket costs. Lower deductibles indicate lower claims expenses but greater coverage prices.

Rates of Reimbursement

Pumpkin reimburses accepted claims at 90% across every plan, independent of location or pet age. Policyholders must pay 10% of claims following their deductible.

Options for Annual Limit

Pet insurance policy yearly limits are the maximum payments the insurer will provide in a year. Pumpkin has yearly limitations for dogs and cats but is limitless for both. Pumpkin has these yearly limits:

For dogs: $10,000, $20,000, unlimited.

For cats: $7,000, $15,000, Unlimited

Pros

Reimburses claims of 90% of total cost

Covers microchip implants in standard policy

Cons

Offers wellness care for 8-week-to-5-month-old dogs and cats.

Offers no Saturday or Sunday client service.

Has no mobile app.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Exclusions

Like other pet insurance companies, Pumpkin does not cover diseases identified before the 14-day waiting period. After enrolling, you have a waiting period for reimbursements.

Pumpkin will compensate you for previously identified and treated disorders after 180 days without therapy or symptoms, but preexisting conditions aren't covered. This provision excludes knee and ligament issues.

Other Pumpkin exclusions:

  • Tissue transplant
  • Heart valve replacement
  • Death services
  • Grooming
  • Cosmetic operations like declawing and tail docking
  • Optional procedures
  • Herbal skin and supplement products

Pumpkin is accessible nationally, but policy specifics differ by jurisdiction, so download the example policy for your state.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Waiting Periods

Pre-existing conditions are not covered for a certain amount of time after pet insurance begins. Pet insurance all have waiting periods, but they vary.

Pumpkin dog insurance needs 14 days for accident, sickness, ligament, and knee diagnosis, therapy, and surgery. Pumpkin applies its usual waiting time to knee injuries and hip malformations rather than a condition-specific 6-month or 1-year period of waiting like other providers.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cost

Pumpkin pet insurance costs an average of $109.74. The average cost of business cat insurance is $61.57. Your actual costs may be different from these averages since they are based on our sample quotes. The age, breed, and geographic region of your pet are the three main factors that pet insurers use to determine risk and premium premiums.

The emblem references Raleigh, North Carolina plans for a 4-year-old dog and cat. We suppose cats have a $15,000 yearly cap and a $250 deductible, while dogs have $10,000 and $250. One notable aspect of Pumpkin is its excellent reimbursement rate across all insurance. Payouts are 90% with many pet insurance. Your monthly price will increase with that option, although it's often less expensive than Pumpkin's.

A medium in size mixed-breed dog in Raleigh may cost $75.93 per month according to Pumpkin. A similar plan with 80% compensation costs $24 more per month than Lemonade's 90% payment option.

Alternatives to Pumpkin

Lemonade

Lemonade, similar to Pumpkin pet insurance, offers pet insurance that covers accidents and illnesses. However, dental work and behavioral therapy are not included in Lemonade's basic plan. A higher premium is required to include them in your coverage. As an example, these therapies are covered under Pumpkin's regular plan.

Preventative, Preventative+ and Puppy/Kitten Preventative are the three varieties of preventative care programs offered by Lemonade. Spaying and neutering are included in the puppy and kitten preventative care package, but not in Pumpkin's wellness add-on.

Spot

Spot pet insurance differs from Pumpkin in that it provides both sickness and accident coverage in addition to an accident-only plan. Additionally, two different preventative care programs are available for selection. The cheaper plan covers wellness examinations and vaccines, while the more costly one covers spay/neuter surgery, urinalysis, and blood testing. Spot's accident-only plan covers alternative treatments, prescription medications, stem cell therapy, tooth extractions, and more for approved accidents.

Should You Invest in Pumpkin Pet Insurance?

You may find Pumpkin's basic and preventative coverages particularly attractive if you have a young pet since they are on a level with or beyond industry norms. If your puppy or kitten has four immunizations between eight weeks and five months of age, and you have had them before enrolling them in a Pumpkin wellness package, the business will reimburse you for the entire cost of those vaccines.
